That’s right kids! GWAR landed at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, MD on September 29, 2019 and bathed the adoring audience in alien blood, semen, and other bodily fluids. I was there in a white painter’s suit taking pictures — slipping and sliding around in the photo pit like a madman; or in this case GWAR’S human slave pit. GWAR have landed on the Earth once again and the intergalactic “Scumdogs” are here to hold American world leaders and other crooked North American figures accountable for their bad behavior and poor attitude. GWAR’S new album, The Blood of Gods is nothing less than a sacred text chronicling the rise of humanity against their makers.
Lucky for us Earthlings, GWAR are currently in the Milky Way Galaxy on a headlining tour for the fall and winter seasons. Supporting GWAR are metal thrashers Against the Grain, Toxic Holocaust, and Sacred Reich. The “Use Your Collusion” tour kicked off September 12th in Norfolk, VA and will run through November 5th in Indianapolis, IN. GWAR also recently announced “Use Your Collusion” holiday tour dates. Merry Xmas human scum!!!
GWAR claims to show humans what they really are; “a parasitical disease that must be eradicated before they suck the planet dry.” The band are designed to prosecute the powers that be for their unthinkable crimes against humanity. However, for this trek GWAR has put on trial themselves.
This was my first time seeing GWAR live. Within the first few moments of GWAR’S opening song, they decapitated a man on stage and soaked onlookers with blood from his gushing torso. It was fucking amazing. That was about the tamest thing that happened during the entire performance. The show was not for children or the faint of heart, though there was a distinct Vaudevillian/circus-like quality to GWAR’S performance. I had a fucking blast! It was thoroughly entertaining. Visually stunning and sonically brutal. I suppose you must be a bit twisted and/or mentally disturbed to enjoy this type of entertainment though.
The stage set was like a scene straight out of a bad acid trip. Stage props included decomposing corpses, disemboweled human subjects, saws, swords, rusty torture devices, and a talking toilet from hell. The stagehands for the band quickly changed clothes after setting up — ditching their normal attire for soiled loin cloths, thongs, and spiked leather underwear. At this point they had taken on the role of GWAR’S personal right-hand slaves.
The ages old battle between GWAR and the forces of all that is uptight and evil in our world rages on. Along the way the band have blasted politics, authority, organized religion, corporate greed, factory-farming, fast food chains, and Hollywood to name a few. GWAR, no doubt, challenges your perception of a heavy metal band, and they also challenge your perception of “reality.”
GWAR’S current incarnation features Blöthar the Berserker on vocals, Pustulus Maximus on lead guitar, Balsac the Jaws of Death on rhythm guitar, Beefcake the Mighty on bass, and Jizmak da Gusha on drums. The band is known for their trademark sound, look, and funny backstory. GWAR also features Bonesnapper (body guard), Sawborg Destructo (Nemesis), and their manager Sleazy P. Martini.
The story of GWAR is carved across the history of this barren and hopeless planet, but GWAR themselves are not of this world. Their story begins in the deepest reaches of outer space. “Long ago, the beings who would become the rock band GWAR were part of an elite fighting force, the Scumdogs of the Universe. For eons, they served as thralls to a supreme being known only as the Master.”
“But one by one, each future member of the band earned a glaring reputation for being an intergalactic fuck-up. And so, they were banished, sent away on a fool’s errand to conquer an insignificant shitball floating in a dark corner of the universe; the planet Earth. Once here, GWAR shaped the face of the globe, destroying and rebuilding the natural world, and giving rise to all of human history. Aliens to some, gods and demons to others, our erstwhile Scumdogs fucked apes to create the human race, and this fateful unplanned pregnancy would prove to be truly disastrous!” Yep, that’s one hell of a backstory!
GWAR is a band that spreads fear and panic wherever they go. Their shows are epic musical spectacles that any fan of rock and roll, hard rock, heavy metal, or horror would not want to miss. I enjoyed every moment of GWAR’S theatrical performance.
Luckily for some concert-goers, GWAR has plenty of stops to make on their extended North American tour. Be sure to check GWAR’S Official Website for all remaining tour dates and other info about the band. Go out and see GWAR ya damn fool!!! Yeah, you! Stop masturbating in front of your computer screen and get out of the house!!! You won’t be disappointed. Happiness and joy awaits.
