Digable Planets played for a sold out crowd at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia on February 24, 2020 — and I, Andy Jillson, was there to capture some of the eclectic performance. This show was sold out for a reason. Digable Planets were awesome! Seriously. Wow. I am extremely fortunate to have obtained a photo pass for this show. I dig, Digable Planets. The Birchmere was packed for this performance. The whole place was jamming. Digable Planets played several of their classics along with a few deep tracks and a couple surprises. Their fans were losing their shit most of the show. People were people up on their feet — dancing in their seats, in the aisles, and up against the stage. The band successfully created a unifying atmosphere with their live music.
Digable Planets honestly caught me off guard and had me jamming along with their enthusiastic audience. And their drummer is sick! Though there is no photo pit at The Birchmere, I was still able to take some decent shots of the band. The trio of MC’s dominated the stage and ripped their mics. The band both looked different than I remember and sounded a bit different than I recall.
Doodlebug, Ladybug Mecca, and Ishmael Butler of Digable Planets emerged during the “Golden Age” of hip-hop in the early 1990’s. However, their sound is just as fresh and their stage presence is unmatched. There’s not much else to say. If you have a chance to see Digable Planets live, do so. Be sure to check the Official Digable Planets Website for all tour dates, merch, music, and other info about the band.
