It was a beautiful day for Major League Rugby; however, home team Old Glory DC were defeated by the visiting Toronto Arrows (40-19). The victory, at Segra Field in Leesburg, VA on 4/3/21, was the Arrows’ first of the season. Not the outcome DC was hoping for, but it was a well-played match by Toronto.

For more coverage of the match be sure to check out oldglorydc.com and/or torontoarrows.com. Also be sure to check the official Major League Rugby website for schedules, tickets, and MLR headline news articles. Continue reading below for more photographic coverage of the match. Major League Rugby’s Old Glory DC won their match against Rugby ATL at home opener on Saturday, March 27. In Old Glory DC’s first-ever home game, at their new home on Segra Field in Leesburg, Virginia, they made a tremendous comeback during the second half of the game — defeating Rugby ATL 30-23.

Old Glory DC entered league competition with Major League Rugby (MLR) in February of 2020. Playing its home games at the brand new Segra Field, Old Glory DC will compete in MLR’s Eastern Conference against teams from Atlanta, New England, New Orleans, New York and Toronto, as well as play games against Western Conference teams Austin, Houston, San Diego, Seattle, and Utah. Bumpin Uglies kicked off the weekend at Baltimore Soundstage on March 19, 2021 and I was fortunate enough to be there enjoying the live music and spacious photo pit. The performance was their first of three sold out shows at Soundstage last week. This was my first time back in the venue since February 2020. Felt so good. It was a much needed dose of socially-distanced live music and concert photography.

Anyway, in this photo flashback we’re taking a glimpse into the world of post-COVID concerts. Continue reading below for more shots of Bumpin Uglies performing for a sold out room of mask-wearing fans in Baltimore, MD. All images copyright and courtesy of Andy Jillson.

NIXIL: All Knots Untied

Born on the cusp of the death of western civilization, NIXIL — featuring past members of Spectral Tombs, Tsepesch, Dagger Moon, and Corpse Light — is the expression of the deep existential frustration of four individuals in collaboration, wielding music and art as a powerful manifestation of strength in chaos and a defiant middle finger to the suffocating grip of a toxic and crumbling world.

That’s right folks, in this artist alert post (my first) I’m recommending the black metal band NIXIL. They recently unleased their full-length debut album, All Knots Untied, and it’s a must-listen for all metal fans. I’m personally not a fan of black metal; however, All Knots Untied is refreshingly different and much easier on the ears. The album is a fearlessly dark/psychedelic/progressive black metal debut masterpiece. All other occultist “black metal” artists need to pack up their Ouija boards and take a fucking hike! All hail NIXIL!!! Anyway, continue reading below for music, photos, and info about NIXIL.

Eric Scott (Photo by Andy Jillson)

The Eric Scott Band played a sold out show at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, MD on February 25, 2021 and I was there doing my best to photograph the band behind a plexiglass barrier. Eric Scott is a Washington, DC singer-songwriter and bassist. He has toured internationally and is a 15-time Wammie winner, as awarded by the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA). He’s also a 2021 Wammie Finalist. Amazing.

Anyway, in this photo flashback, we’re taking a trip down memory lane with the Eric Scott Band. This was my first show of the year, and Eric’s too! DEYSSI

Los Angeles based noise-rock trio DEYSSI will be releasing their second album, $273.96, January 15, 2021 on Chain Letter Collective. Max Terlecki launched DEYSSI in 2014 and the band released their first EP in 2015 and first full-length album (Ten Persons, Ten Colors) in 2019. In the spring of 2020, the band’s three members gathered in a windowless concrete room inside an industrial building just outside of LA’s Chinatown neighborhood to record $273.96. The result: dark, improvisational chaos.

I spoke with Max about the band and the upcoming release of their second full-length album, $273.96. I highly recommend listening to DEYSSI if you’re into noisy, experimental, DIY, indie punk rock. Anyway, continue reading below for my interview with Max Terlecki of DEYSSI.

Dead Kennedys (Photo by Andy Jillson)

On March 3, 2020 I photographed pioneering punk rockers the Dead Kennedys and D.O.A. at DC’s historic 9:30 Club. I had only vaguely heard about the coronavirus at that time and certainly had no idea this was going to be the last concert I would attend for the next seven months. In between band sets a staff member informed me that the 9:30 Club and all other DC venues were going to be “temporarily shutdown” beginning the following day. Well…here we are almost nine months later. Ugh.

Anyway, in this Photo Flashback I am remembering my time with the Dead Kennedys and D.O.A.. Continue reading below for more images of both bands performing at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC on 3/11/2020. All images copyright and courtesy of Andy Jillson.

Dark Star Orchestra (Photo by Andy Jillson)

Dark Star Orchestra played to a sold out crowd of psychedelic ghouls and goblins at the Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick, MD on October 31, 2020 and I was masked-up in the photo pit to capture some of this unusual event. All Good Presents and Showtime At The Drive-In hosted drive-in concert events at the fairgrounds last fall and DSO rose the Dead on Halloween night 2020. There was music, magic, mischief, and mayhem. What more could you want?!?

Anyway, in this Photo Flashback I am remembering my time with DSO. Continue reading below for more images of Dark Star Orchestra performing for a sold out (socially-distanced) crowd at the Frederick Fairgrounds on 10/31/20. All images copyright and courtesy of Andy Jillson.

Goose (Photo by Andy Jillson)

Goose and their musical gaggle landed at the Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick, MD on October 19, 2020 and sold the place out. Showtime At The Drive-In has been hosting drive-in concert events at the fairgrounds and Goose have been the best act yet. This was my introduction to the band and honestly, I was blown away by their musical performance and uplifting vibes. Goose are definitely not your average “jam band” or “indie band.”

Bumpin Uglies (Photo by Andy Jillson)

Bumpin Uglies performed in Stephens City, VA at The Family Drive-In on October 18, 2020 and I was there documenting some of the action. This was my third drive-in concert of the season and my first time attempting to take promo shots for a band.

Bumpin Uglies brought along fellow East Coasters Higher Education to kick off the show and both bands were obviously enjoying being back on stage again. The fans in attendance also seemed to have had a hell of a time. Continue reading below for more photos of Bumpin Uglies and Higher Education performing at The Family Drive-In on 10/18/20.
