For my first time covering a baseball game, I was fortunate enough to obtain a media/photo pass for the Wilmington Blue Rocks versus the Aberdeen IronBirds at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware. These are MiLB teams, but both ball clubs played like they were in the majors. Unfortunately for the home team, the IronBirds took the win. Final score: IronBirds 5, Blue Rocks 3.
Be sure to check out The Official Site of the Wilmington Blue Rocks for schedule, tickets, stats/scores. and merch. Continue reading below for more photographic coverage of the game and info on the Blue Rocks. All photos copyright and courtesy of Andy Jillson.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks are owned and operated by Main Street Baseball, Ballpark Digest’s 2016 Organization of the Year. The Blue Rocks play at Judy Johnson Field at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium in downtown Wilmington, Delaware. Frawley Stadium was voted the Nation’s best Advanced-A facility in 2015 by Ballpark Digest.
The Blue Rocks recently signed a 10-year professional development license with the Washington Nationals. After losing the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blue Rocks have returned to the field in 2021 for a 120-game season.
As part of the new MiLB structure, the Blue Rocks will make their debut as an affiliate of the Washington Nationals in 2021 and begin play in a new 12-team league. Joining Wilmington in the Northern Division will be Aberdeen, MD (Baltimore), Lakewood, NJ (Philadelphia), Brooklyn, NY (New York Mets) and Hudson Valley, NY (New York Yankees). The Southern Division will be home to the rest of the league, comprising Asheville, NC (Houston), Bowling Green, KY (Tampa Bay), Greensboro, NC (Pittsburgh), Greenville, SC (Boston), Hickory, NC (Texas), Rome, GA (Atlanta) and Winston-Salem, NC (Chicago White Sox).
